Weapons of Mass Destruction - a Visual Perspective

The expression "weapons of mass destruction" has become part of our vocabulary, but it remains an abstraction for many of us. The photographer Martin Miller has created a retrospective gallery of these weapons; most are from the Cold War era.
These two images are the Trinity (above, the first nuclear device) and the Fat Man bomb (below - that's the Nagasaki bomb). To view the other images use this LINK.

Hot bath

Most monkeys are happy swinging in the trees of tropical jungles but from the look on the face of this one there is nothing like indulging in a hot bath after a long day.
These incredible pictures are of Japanese macaques relaxing in a hot spring in Yamanouchi, central Japan.
Nicknamed the snow monkey, the cheeky-looking animals live a much chillier existence than their tropical cousins and they appear to like nothing better than keeping warm in steaming-hot pools such as this one.

Buddhas everywhere

Buddah, Buddah and more Buddah: The Buddah Project.
The online magazine Lens Culture proposed the creation of a huge repository of Buddah images. Currently there are more than 540 photos in the collection and everyday this number increases.
According to the creators, "an archive of hundreds of Buddha images may well generate good karma for everyone involved, viewers and contributors, alike."
Well, don't know about the karma... but the images are pretty neat.
You can join the project: just send a picture of a Buddha to the gallery. Or just visit the collection: LINK.

Online image editor: Pixenate

Need a good online image editor? Try Pixenate.
It's good, easy to use and it's free.
It's simpler than Pixlr (which is quite robust), but it is also good, specially for less complex tasks.
There is even a specific tool for teeth whitening (depending on the person you are going to shoot this could be very useful...).

Slow-motion Tilt-Shift

Australian photographer Keith Loutit used tilt-shift camera lens to take pictures of people and objects and make them appear like miniature figurines. He then assembled the shots to build some pretty fantastic-looking time-lapse videos.

-Robert-Doisneau,-1948-778811.jpg)
Today's images were inspired by this picture (above) - "Le Regard Oblique" or "The Sidelong Glance", taken by the great French photographer Robert Doisneau in 1948. All of them have a subject that is looking deceitfully to something out of curiosity, lust or just good old envy...

Convert images to HTML, ASCII or Matrix style
This isn't exactly useful but by any chance do you fancy converting pictures to HTML, ASCII or Matrix-style patterns?
If you answered "yes, I always dreamed about it" - today is your lucky day. The website "tex-image.com" (LINK) does exactly that.
The images above (clockwise) are: original Apple logo; HTML version; ASCII version; Matrix-styled version (click on each one to enlarge).

Photoscape: photo editor (free)

What is better than a good software? A good and free software, right? The Photoscape photo editing software is nice and easy to use, and it's free.
Maybe you already know PIXLR, which is really good (I use it all the time), but it's an online photo editor - so if you are willing to use a photo editor without connecting to the internet, it's useless.
But Photoscape isn't online - you have to download the software. So you can use it whenever you want it, which could be practical in some cases...
The product page is HERE. Direct download: LINK.

Photos That Changed The World

Some of the most famous photographs in the world are at "Photos that Changed the World", which you could find HERE.
Some are shocking (like the burning monk in the beginning of this post), others really changed something in the world and many others just captured precisely the zeitgeist of a given era.
It worth a view - and you can submit a photo too...

17 Gigapixel panorama

This is pretty cool.
A regular picture has 12, 13 megapixel. So you can figure the image quality of a 17 Gigapixel panorama.
Click the image above to access the panorama.
The definition of this picture is so high that you can zoom in until find people walking within the landscape (find HERE some locations - but try to find for yourself too... like in the summit of the mountain, near the center of the image, where you could find at least 12).
This panorama represents the Glacier Point at Yosemite National Park, and was made from 2046 pictures taken from Gerard Maynard, a NY artist, to the "Yosemite Extreme Panoramic Imaging Project".
At the artist's website (LINK) there are four smaller images with extremely high resolution as well: Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, Taft Point e Washburn Point. Click in anyone and then choose "View in Zoomify" to navegate.
Enjoy...
