Squid vs. robot

A squid got stuck in a Petrobras' ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) that is rising to the surface: the data shows that it got attached to the robot at 430m deep and although it was "poked" by the robotic arm, it escaped (or choose to left) only when the vehicle reached 180m.

Japanese paratrooper's jump from helicopter goes wrong

A line that is supposed to open a soldier’s parachute gets snagged during an Self-Defense Forces training exercise this week in Hokkaido.

The situation was resolved when the helicopter slowly descended and allowed the soldier, who was a member of the GSDF’s elite 1st Airborne Brigade, to cut the line and fall safely to the ground. He suffered a bloody nose, but was otherwise okay.

Diet = $$$$

The focus of the next diet fad might be cash rather than carbohydrates. Kevin Volpp of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia found that obese people offered a financial reward for every kilogram shed lost more weight during a 16-week trial than those given standard diet advice.

The drawback? Like other weight-loss methods, many of the participants put the pounds back on once the programme ended. To achieve longer-lasting results the monthly payments, some totalling several hundred dollars, might have to be made for longer periods.

Volpp's results mean that obesity may join the list of social maladies that can be addressed using financial incentives. Previous experiments have shown that smokers and cocaine addicts can be weaned off their habits by paying them to stay drug-free. Incentives have also successfully been used to ensure that parents in developing countries send their children to school.

One of the biggest incentives schemes ever run in a rich nation got underway last year in New York. Over 5000 families are being studied to see if cash incentives can improve the rate at which children receive regular health check ups and adults attend work training courses.

Teddy Bears in space

Strange but true: four teddy bears were sent to a suborbital flight...

Four teddy bears voyaged to the edge of space on Monday December 1st as an experiment run by Cambridge University Spaceflight.

The bears were lifted to 99,000ft above sea level on a latex high altitude balloon filled with helium. The aim of the experiment was to determine which materials provided the best insulation against the -53 ° C temperatures experienced during the journey. Each of the bears wore a different space suit designed by kids ranging 11-13 year olds.

The payload which carried the bears was designed by Cambridge University Spaceflight and contained several cameras, a flight computer, GPS and a radio. During the 2 hour and 9 minute flight, the radio broadcasted the location of the payload to a chase team on the ground. The team predicted the landing site using wind speed data and arrived in time to see the payload and teddy bears drift slowly back down to earth by parachute. The teddies landed in a field 4 miles north east of Ipswich.

“We want to offer young people the opportunity to get involved in the space industry whilst still at school and show that real-life science is something that is open to everybody” says Iain Waugh, CU Spaceflight’s chief aeronautical engineer. “High altitude balloon flights are a fantastic way of encouraging interest in science. They are easy to understand, and produce amazing results.” remarks Daniel Strange, treasurer of CU Spaceflight.

El Caganer: Catalonia's Fecal Christmas

Some of the world's most curious Christmas traditions can be found in Catalonia, where the idea of holiday cheer seems to involve some of life's more basic bodily functions.

A caganer -- or "pooper" -- is a small figurine of a person squatting down with lowered pants (or raised skirt) to answer nature's call. They have been around since the 17th century and can often be found hiding in an obscure corner of a Nativity scene.

Some say that the figurines originally became popular among farmers who believed -- quite practically -- that the caganer's "offerings" would make the soil rich and productive for the coming year.

The Wikipedia entry mentions how the caganer might represent "the equality of all people" because "everyone defecates" or it may be meant to reinforce that "the infant Jesus is God in human form."

Young children in Catalonia still play a Where's-Waldo-like game that involves searching for the caganer in the Nativity scene arrangement. According to the Friends Web site, the caganer is "placed under a bridge, behind a haystack or otherwise discretely hidden" as it "would show a lack of respect" to have him near the arrangement's manger scene.

The original el caganer is a wooden or clay figure of a peasant wearing the traditional floppy red Catalan cap with a black band (barretina) and smoking a cigarette or a pipe. But the figure's popularity has led to a massive expansion in the range of defecating figurines.

After the jump you will see images and a video of some caganers made after celebrities: Barack Obama, Lula (Brazilian President) and Ronaldo (soccer player).

Do you think you know your astrological sign? Think again...

It's a great conversation starter: "What's your sign?"

But before you ask or answer that question, consider this: your zodiac sign corresponds to the position of the sun relative to constellations as they appeared over 2200 years ago!

The science behind astrology may have its roots in astronomy but don’t confuse these two disciplines. Astronomy can explain the position of the stars in the sky but it’s up to you to determine what, if anything, their alignment signifies.

The Constellations of the Zodiac

The ecliptic, or the position of the Sun as it’s perceived from the revolving Earth, passes through the constellations that formed the Zodiac - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Zodiac signs were originally determined by which constellation the Sun was "in" on the day you were born.

Early astronomers observed the Sun traveling through the signs of the Zodiac in the course of one year, spending about a month in each. Thus, they calculated that each constellation extends 30 degrees across the ecliptic.

However, a phenomenon called precession has altered the position of the constellations we see today.

Precession and Astrology

The first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere was once marked by the zero point of the Zodiac. Astronomers call this the vernal equinox and it occurs as the ecliptic and celestial equator intersect.

Around 600 BCE, the zero point was in Aries and was called the "first point of Aries" (Figure 1, below).

The constellation Aries encompassed the first 30 degrees of the ecliptic; from 30 to 60 degrees was Taurus; from 60 to 90 degrees was Gemini; and so on for all twelve constellations of the Zodiac.

Unbeknownst to the ancient astrologers, the Earth continually wobbles around its axis in a 25,800-year cycle. This wobble—called precession—is caused by the gravitational attraction of the Moon on Earth's equatorial bulge(figure 1.1, left).

Over the past two-and-a-half millennia, this wobble has caused the intersection point between the celestial equator and the ecliptic to move west along the ecliptic by 36 degrees, or almost exactly one-tenth of the way around. This means that the signs have slipped one-tenth—or almost one whole month—of the way around the sky to the west, relative to the stars beyond.

For instance, those born between March 21 and April 19 consider themselves to be Aries. Today, the Sun is no longer within the constellation of Aries during much of that period. From March 11 to April 18, the Sun is actually in the constellation of Pisces! (Figure 2, below)

See also Figure 3 (below), which demonstrates the precession of the equinoxes from 600 BCE to 2600.

Your "Real Sign"

The table below lists the dates when the Sun is actually within the astronomical constellations of the Zodiac, according to modern constellation boundaries and corrected for precession (these dates can vary a day from year to year).

You will most likely find that once precession is taken into account, your zodiac sign is different. And if you were born between November 29 and December 17, your sign is actually one you never saw in the newspaper: you are an Ophiuchus! The eliptic passes through the constellation of Ophiuchus after Scorpius.

Now you really have something cool with which to start that conversation!

Check out your “real” zodiac sign below and see what the sky looked like on your birthday by going to the Birthday Sky application.

Capricorn - Jan 20 to Feb 16
Aquarius - Feb 16 to Mar 11
Pisces - Mar 11 to Apr 18
Aries - Apr 18 to May 13
Taurus - May 13 to Jun 21
Gemini - Jun 21 to Jul 20
Cancer - Jul 20 to Aug 10
Leo - Aug 10 to Sep 16
Virgo - Sep 16 to Oct 30
Libra - Oct 30 to Nov 23
Scorpius - Nov 23 to Nov 29
Ophiuchus - Nov 29 to Dec 17
Sagittarius - Dec 17 to Jan 20

Robot jockey

A robot jockey is commonly used on camels in camel racing as a replacement for human jockeys. Developed beginning in 2004, the robotic jockeys are slowly phasing out the use of human jockeys, which, in the case of camel racing in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, often employs small children who reportedly suffer repeated systemic human rights abuses. In response to international condemnation of such abuses, the nation of Qatar and UAE has banned the use of human jockeys in favor of robots.

Camel racing has been around for thousands of years. "The Sport of Sheiks" almost exclusively utilized small children, usually boys around the age of four, to ride and direct the camels. Often, the boys would be starved to be as light as possible. Many of the boys used for the races were often sold to race organizers or camel owners, and there was an active child slave trade for camel jockeys, involving victims of kidnapping or the children of destitute families who sold them into servitude. The children were rarely schooled, and were sometimes the victims of sexual abuse

The government of Qatar initiated development of the robots beginning in 2004. A Swiss robotics firm named K-Team designed the robots. Part of the initial problems faced by the design team included that the camels were conditioned to the use of human jockeys. Early designs confused or frightened the camels.

The designs were modified to include more human-like features, including a mannequin-like face, sunglasses, hats, racing silks, and even traditional perfumes used with human jockeys. Other issues included the conditions that the robots and the computers would be put under: usually high temperatures in dusty environments, atop a fast moving and turbulent ride.

The robots are small, light weight, and are remote controlled, usually by operators paralleling the race in SUVs. The robots, which are aluminum-framed with a "thorax" about the size of a large book, contain small hinged arms that control the whip and the reins. The robot can also monitor and transmit the speed and heart rate of the camel.

Angel Wings (flares)

Nothing to do with new age stuff... Angel wings are smoking formations that are created when an aircraft releases (decoy) flares to avoid enemy missiles.

A (decoy) flare is an aerial infrared countermeasure to counter an infrared homing (”heat seeking”) surface-to-air missile (SAM) or air-to-air missile (AAM). The aim is to make the infrared-guided missile seek out the heat signature from the flare rather than the aircraft’s engines.

The Most Powerful Bomb Ever Constructed

Tsar Bomba was the largest, most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. Developed by the Soviet Union, this hydrogen bomb was originally designed to have a yield of about 100 megatons of TNT; however that was reduced by half in order to limit the amount of nuclear fallout that would result.

It detonated at 11:32 on October 30, 1961 over the Mityushikha Bay nuclear testing range, north of the Arctic Circle on Novaya Zemlya Island in the Arctic Sea.

Even at half strength, the Tsar was a hydrogen bomb with a yield of about 50 megatons. This is equivalent to TEN times the amount of ALL the explosives used in World War II combined, including the Little Boy and Fat Man, the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively.

The explosion:

The fireball touched the ground, reached nearly as high as the altitude of the release plane, and was seen and felt almost 1,000 km (621 miles) from ground zero. The heat from the explosion could have caused third degree burns 100 km (62 miles) away from ground zero.

The subsequent mushroom cloud was about 64 km (40 miles) high (nearly seven times higher than Mount Everest) and 40 km (25 miles) wide. The explosion could be seen and felt in Finland, even breaking windows there. The seismic shock created by the detonation was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth. Its Richter magnitude was about 5 to 5.25.

The Tsar Bomba (codenamed Ivan) was so powerful that it was completely impractical: much of the explosion's energy radiated upwards into space, and that which didn't was so excessive that using the device on any populated targets world would have resulted in adverse effects on Russian interests. It served as nothing more than a show of force.

Only one (real) unit was built, and a real sized mock bomb is stored in the Russian Nuclear Weapons Museum in Sarov.

Surrey teacher Sarwan Singh, a devout Sikh, now has the world's longest beard as officially measured at 1.895 metres last night at the Akal Academy in Surrey.

His beard, measured in an elaborate ceremony witnessed by three judges, many members of the media and close to 200 people, will be submitted to Guinness World Records officials for recognition.

The previous record was held by Shamsher Singh of the Punjab in India, with a beard last measured at 1.83 metres in 1977.

As he posed for pictures with his wife and two children, Singh's beard hung from his chin to the floor.

"Thank you to the all-mighty God," said Singh, 42, dressed in a traditional white Sikh garment. "This is a gift from God. I have a feeling of divine happiness."

Ok then...

Nevermind: now and then

The Nirvana "Nevermind" cover has always been one of my favorites. Maybe it's the most creative cover of all (pretty cool, huh?)

This is Nirvana's second album, released in 1991 (the first album, Bleach, was released two years earlier). Wow... that's the kind of thing that make people feel old: 17 years has passed since 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' started playing in the radios.

But back to the point: Spencer Elden, the (then) baby has 17 years now, and he recreated that historic cover.

See how it looks after the jump(click to enlarge).

Stop motion: moving

2.800 pictures taken within 3 weeks resulted in this 3'30" video that shows a trivial (but interesting) thing: a guy moving to a new apartment. It's kind of mesmerizing...

And the music is great: The Way You Look Tonight (Brian Ferry's version).

How to hide an airplane factory?

Before

After

During WWII an airplane factory would be a potential target, so it's better to camouflage it. But how to do it?

Using trompe l’oeil and a lot of camouflage nets. And so Lockheed became a nice rural area (at least if seen from above).

See more images after the jump.

Einstein's FBI files

According to the FBI, an investigation was conducted regarding the famous physicist because of his affiliation with the Communist Party. Einstein was a member, sponsor, or affiliated with thirty-four communist fronts between 1937 and 1954. He also served as honorary chairman for three communist organizations.

The whale and the surfer

Have you noticed that beneath the surfer there is a huge whale? Click to enlarge.

Seconds after this photo was snapped remotely by David's camera, mounted on the kite apparatus, the whale flicked up its tail and gave him an almighty blow on the back of his head.

Because the camera was programmed to take pictures every 10 seconds it missed the moment when the whale struck David - but this incredible shot of the massive creature swimming beneath him is reminder enough of his close encounter...

The Worlds Trickiest Runway Approach

There aren't many (if any at all) runway approaches that compare in terms of trickiness to that of Runway 02 at Toncontin International Airport in Honduras. It's almost as if the planners decided to include every potential hazard they could imagine when considering the landing strip's location. First of all, take a look at the runway itself.

In case you hadn't noticed it's pretty small and with a landing distance of 5'442ft it is without doubt one of the shortest runways in the world to welcome aircraft the size of a Boeing 757. However, if this was the only scary part worth mentioning, this airport certainly wouldn't be unique as there are many runways all over the world that boast runways of a similar size, if not shorter. Have a look at this next photo.

Notice the angle of approach? That's no mistake on the pilot's part, it's an absolute must for anyone wishing to touch down at Toncontin, an airport whose runway is already a dangerous destination due to its length. The problem is, the area surrounding the airport is made up of mountains and it's physically impossible to approach this airport head on from distance due to the terrain. So the aircraft have to approach from a different angle, resulting in the need to make a sharp turn just prior to landing and giving very little time for the pilot to level the plane. Watch this video and you'll get the idea.

It's also worth noting how close the road is to the runway. There's a very short distance between the traffic and the aircraft as it approaches. For an even better understanding of the nerves needed for even an experienced pilot to land at Toncontin, watch the next video, filmed from inside the cockpit. At the very end of the clip, after the plane has landed, you'll hear confirmation that this runway is certainly not loved, even by the very people trained to land these machines.

Meet Captain Fantastic

A teenager has changed his name to Captain Fantastic Faster Than Superman Spiderman Batman Wolverine Hulk And The Flash Combined.

The record-breaking name, now thought to be the world's longest, was the idea of music graduate George Garratt, 19.

He changed his name by deed poll online for £10 last week.

Captain Fantastic said: "I wanted to be unique.

"I decided upon a theme of superheroes."

Captain Fantastic joins a number of people with unusually long names, including Rhoshandiatellyneshiaunneveshenk Koyaanisquatsiuth Williams, a girl born in Texas in 1984.

The teenager, from Glastonbury, Somerset, added that while he thought the new name was "crazy", his grandmother was no longer speaking to him.

Last month in Italy, a couple was banned from naming their son Friday - Venerdi - because the name could expose him to ridicule.

Named after the manservant of Daniel Defoe's famous novel Robinson Crusoe, the court ordered the boy's name be changed to Gregorio, named after the saint's day on which he was born.

In February, a judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so she could change her name from Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

Other banned names include Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit.

In New Zealand again, last year a couple was banned from naming their baby 4Real, so they chose Superman instead.

How to spend 1.4 billion dollars

It's easy: destroying an aircraft like this, a B2 Spirit bomber.

These images were taken when one crashed at Andersen AFB (Guam) in February 2008. Investigators demonstrated that moisture in the flight computers caused the aircraft to adopt a nose-up attitude - which reduced the airspeed and stalled the bomber.

Both pilots were able to eject in safety. The following video shows the accident (starting at 1:55).

Motherhood vs mucus

Another curious product available at "The Land of the Rising Sun": "Mama's Snot Remover" (Hana-mizu tote). As far as I understood one straw is inserted in the baby's nose and the other one is kept into the mother's mouth, which aspires and then makes the snot to fall into the plastic reservoir.

Useful or not, the idea of sucking mucus from a baby's nose (even if the baby in question happens to be yours) isn't tremendously disgusting?

Bad idea: to land a Harrier on a pile of mattresses

The Harrier is an airplane with vertical/short takeoff and landing capabilities, operated by Navies and Air Forces of several countries.

What to do when the landing gear of such a plane doesn't work? Since it could manage to land like an helicopter somebody came with the great idea of making it land over a pile of mattresses.

See what happens...

The turbine aspired the mattresses, causing more damage than if the landing were made directly onto concrete.

The best defense? A glowing blue spit cloud...

And this is true for Heterocarpus laevigatus shrimp. Know as "smooth nylon shrimp" it inhabits the dark depths of the Pacific and employs a brilliant method of defense. When threatened with attack, the creature spits a cloud of glowing blue fluid from its mouth, temporarily blinding predators and allowing it to escape.

German scientists think LEDs are the new Botox

If a new German study about wrinkle reduction is correct, the use of Botox will soon be a thing from the past. This study reveals that the intense visible light from light emitting diodes (LEDs - those miniature lights used in an array of products, from TV remote controls to traffic lights) applied daily for several weeks resulted in rejuvenated skin, with reduced wrinkle levels and increased resiliency.

And its not from any special LEDs either; its the same ones that are used in all the products that you use daily. Only these ones need to be high intensity ones.

Apparently the light penetrates the molecular structure of a layer of water on elastin (the protein that provides elasticity to the skin), allowing the skin to regain its elasticity - and so reducing the wrinkles.
